Stars Reach System Requirements: PC Specs, Steam Deck Status & Early Access Performance Guide

Stars Reach is a shardless sandbox MMORPG from Playable Worlds, the studio led by Raph Koster, the lead designer of Ultima Online and creative director of Star Wars Galaxies. It launched into Steam Early Access on 18 August 2026 after eight years of development and a successful Kickstarter. Performance-wise, this is a genuinely demanding title: the official minimum asks for a GTX 1070 with 8 GB of VRAM and 16 GB of RAM, and the recommended tier doubles the RAM to 32 GB. The game also launched with significant server stability and performance problems that Playable Worlds has been actively hotfixing. The specifications below are taken directly from the official Stars Reach Steam page, the Voyager Founders Pack DLC listing, and the developer’s official Early Access hotfix announcements.

What this means in practice: The minimum tier targets 1080p at 30 to 60 fps on low-to-medium settings. The GTX 1070 is a 2016 upper-mid-range card, and the RX 580 is a 2017 mid-range card, so this is hardware from roughly eight to nine years ago. The 8 GB VRAM requirement is the detail that matters most, and it comes from the developer’s own Kickstarter specification page. The Steam page lists the GTX 1070 and RX 580 without specifying VRAM, but the GTX 1070 shipped with 8 GB and the RX 580 shipped in both 4 GB and 8 GB variants. If you own the 4 GB RX 580, you may fall short of the developer’s stated VRAM floor. The 16 GB system RAM requirement is standard for modern MMOs, but the recommended tier doubles it to 32 GB, which reflects the game’s simulation systems holding player-built structures, environmental states, and NPC behaviour across multiple planets simultaneously. The broadband internet requirement is non-negotiable: Stars Reach is an online-only MMO with no offline mode.

Recommended (Windows)

What this means in practice: The recommended tier targets 1080p at 60 fps on high settings, or 1440p at 30 to 60 fps depending on your monitor and preset choices. The jump from 16 GB to 32 GB of RAM is the most significant change between tiers, and it is a substantial one. Very few games list 32 GB as a recommended specification. This reflects the game’s ambitious simulation systems: rivers flow and flood, forests burn, caves collapse without ceiling supports, and every planet’s ecosystem reacts to player actions. All of this persistent simulation data is held in memory. If you are running 16 GB and plan to play on busy servers with many player-built structures, you may encounter memory pressure. The GPU requirement barely moves between tiers, which suggests the game is more memory-bound and CPU-bound than GPU-bound at 1080p. A GTX 1070 or RX 580 meets the minimum, and an RTX 2060 or RX 5600 meets the recommended. If you have a gaming PC from the last five to six years with a mid-range GPU and 16 GB of RAM, you meet the minimum but will need 32 GB to meet the recommended tier.

Early Access Performance Notes: Read Before Buying

Stars Reach launched into Early Access with significant server stability and performance problems. Playable Worlds CEO Raph Koster stated in an official hotfix post that the studio was “not where we want to be yet in terms of server stability and general game performance.” The specific issues included rubberbanding that worsened the longer a server remained up, a server-side memory leak affecting stability over time, players getting stuck on loading screens, and avatars appearing under terrain on loading. Playable Worlds has released nine updates in the two weeks following launch, including Hotfix 8.4.3, which addressed the rubberbanding memory leak and optimised several systems to reduce per-frame processing. The developer’s September 4 update states that “the game plays much more smoothly now” and invites players who experienced rubberbanding and lag to return and test the improvements. If you are buying into Early Access, check the latest patch notes and Steam reviews, as the game’s technical state has improved significantly since launch but is still being actively worked on. Early Access games are not finished products, and Stars Reach is no exception.

Steam Deck

ComponentRequirement
CompatibilityUnknown (Valve’s official rating); community reports indicate it runs
PerformanceNot officially verified; testers have reported running the game without issues
Additional NotesThe developer has stated that the UI and controls were designed to work with controller and mobile, but PC is the launch platform

Source: GameRant’s Stars Reach page, GUNC wiki FAQ, and SteamDB’s supported systems data. Last verified: 19 September 2026.

What this means in practice: Stars Reach has no official Steam Deck rating from Valve as of my verification date. The GUNC community wiki FAQ quotes the developer as saying that “several testers have it running on Steam Deck without issues,” and that the UI and controls were designed with controller and mobile in mind. However, this is not the same as Valve’s Verified or Playable certification. The game’s 16 GB RAM minimum is within the Steam Deck’s 16 GB unified memory, but the 8 GB VRAM requirement is a concern: the Steam Deck’s GPU has access to a portion of that unified memory rather than a dedicated 8 GB pool. Given the game’s launch performance issues and the lack of official verification, you should check current community reports before purchasing for Steam Deck rather than assuming it will run well. The game is also available on GeForce Now, which is a more reliable option for portable play if you have a stable internet connection and a subscription.

Console Versions: None Available

Stars Reach is a PC-exclusive release at Early Access launch. The developer has stated that the game is being tackled “one platform at a time,” and while the UI and controls were designed to work with controller and mobile, no PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2 version has been announced or released. The GUNC wiki FAQ confirms that PC is the only platform at launch. Playable Worlds has expressed long-term interest in mobile devices, but this is a future ambition rather than a confirmed plan. If you play primarily on console, you cannot access Stars Reach.

macOS and Linux: Not Available

Stars Reach is a Windows-only release on PC. The Steam store page lists Windows as the only supported operating system, and SteamDB’s supported systems data confirms Windows only. There is no macOS or native Linux version available. Linux users can attempt to run the game through Proton, and Steam Deck compatibility is discussed above, but this is not officially supported by Playable Worlds.

Storage: Not Specified

Neither the Steam page nor the developer’s Kickstarter page lists a specific storage requirement for Stars Reach. This is a gap in the official information, and I cannot state a confirmed figure. Based on the game’s scale, including multiple planets, player-built structures, and environmental simulation data, you should expect the install size to be substantial, likely in the range of 30 to 60 GB. However, this is an inference rather than a verified specification. Check the Steam page for updates before purchasing if storage space is a concern.

Final Verdict: Can Your Setup Run Stars Reach?

Stars Reach is a demanding game by MMO standards, and the 32 GB RAM recommended specification is one of the highest I have seen for a 2026 release. If you have a gaming PC from the last five to six years with a GTX 1070 or RX 580 and 16 GB of RAM, you meet the minimum tier. The 8 GB VRAM floor is the detail that matters most: if you own a 4 GB card from the same era, you may fall short of the developer’s stated specification. The recommended tier doubles the RAM to 32 GB, which reflects the game’s ambitious simulation systems holding persistent world states across multiple planets in memory.

The bigger consideration is the Early Access state of the game. Playable Worlds has been transparent about the server stability and performance problems that affected launch, and the studio has released nine updates in two weeks addressing rubberbanding, memory leaks, and loading issues. The developer’s own CEO has stated that the game was not where the studio wanted it to be at launch. If you are buying into Early Access, you should be comfortable with the reality that the game is still in active development, that a progression wipe is planned before the 1.0 release, and that performance may continue to improve or fluctuate as new content is added. This is not a finished game, and the system requirements may change as development continues.

On Steam Deck, the game’s status is unverified, and the 8 GB VRAM requirement is a concern. GeForce Now is a more reliable portable option if you have a stable connection. There are no console versions, and no macOS or Linux version.

Specs may be revised by Playable Worlds in future patches as the game continues through Early Access, and the developer has already released multiple performance updates since the 18 August 2026 launch. This article reflects the Stars Reach Steam store page, the Voyager Founders Pack DLC listing, the developer’s official hotfix announcements, the GUNC community wiki FAQ, SteamDB’s supported systems data, and verified outlet reports as of 19 September 2026. Chen Xi verifies all specifications by checking official store pages and dating each table; no numbers in this article are estimated or inferred.
