Phonopolis System Requirements: PC Specs, Mac Support & Steam Deck Performance Guide

Phonopolis is a story-driven puzzle adventure from Amanita Design, the studio behind Machinarium, Creaks, and Samorost, and it launched on 20 May 2026 for PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. You play as Felix, a garbage collector who has broken free from the city’s omnipresent loudspeakers and must stop the authoritarian Leader from broadcasting the “Absolute Tone,” a signal that will strip all citizens of their humanity. Performance-wise, this is an exceptionally lightweight title: the official minimum asks for a 2 GHz Intel i5 and just 4 GB of RAM, and the entire game fits into 15 GB of storage. It carries a Steam Deck Verified badge and supports macOS Sierra and later.

System Requirements

Minimum (Windows)

ComponentRequirement
OSWindows 7 (64-bit) or better
Processor2 GHz Intel i5 or better
Memory (RAM)4 GB
GraphicsDirectX 11 compatible GPU
VRAMNot listed separately by the developer; the DirectX 11 requirement is the only GPU specification
DirectXVersion 11
Storage15 GB available space
Additional NotesRequires a 64-bit processor and operating system. Note that as of 1 January 2024, the Steam client only supports Windows 10 and newer, so Windows 10 is the effective minimum for Steam users.

What this means in practice: The minimum tier targets 1080p at 60 fps on the game’s default settings. The 2 GHz Intel i5 requirement covers processors from roughly 2010 onward, and the DirectX 11 compatible GPU specification is deliberately broad, encompassing any graphics card from the last twelve years. This is hardware from the Windows 7 era, and the game is designed to run on laptops and desktops with integrated graphics. The 4 GB system RAM floor is one of the lowest of any 2026 release, and the 15 GB install size is modest for a fully 3D puzzle adventure. If you own a computer built in the last ten to twelve years, you will clear this bar comfortably.

Recommended (Windows)

ComponentRequirement
OSWindows 10 (64-bit) or better
ProcessorIntel Core i7-7700K @ 4.2 GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X @ 3.6 GHz
Memory (RAM)32 GB
GraphicsDirectX 12 compatible GPU with 12 GB VRAM
VRAM12 GB
DirectXVersion 12
Storage15 GB available space
Additional NotesThe recommended specification is listed by 3DNews’ Russian-language review and does not appear on the official Steam page or Amanita Design’s website.

What this means in practice: There is a significant discrepancy in the official information here. Amanita Design’s own website and the Steam Support page list only a Minimum specification with no Recommended tier. The recommended figures above come from a Russian-language review on 3DNews, which lists a 32 GB RAM requirement and a 12 GB VRAM GPU. This is an extraordinarily high recommended specification for a puzzle adventure game, and I want to be direct about the uncertainty: Amanita Design has not confirmed these figures on any official store page. If accurate, the recommended tier would be aimed at high-refresh-rate or high-resolution displays rather than the game’s core experience. For most players, the minimum specification is sufficient, and I would advise against upgrading hardware based on unconfirmed third-party figures.

macOS

ComponentRequirement
OSmacOS Sierra (10.12)
Processor2 GHz Intel i5 or better
Memory (RAM)4 GB
GraphicsMetal compatible GPU
VRAMShared with system memory on integrated GPUs
Storage15 GB available space
Additional NotesMac manufactured in 2012 or later. Apple Silicon Macs are not explicitly listed but should run the game via Rosetta 2 given the game’s lightweight foundation.

What this means in practice: The macOS minimum requires macOS Sierra 10.12 and a Mac manufactured in 2012 or later, with the same 2 GHz i5 processor and 4 GB RAM as the Windows version. The Metal compatible GPU requirement covers all Macs from 2012 onward. The 15 GB install size is identical across platforms. If you own an Intel Mac from the last decade, you can run Phonopolis without issue. Apple Silicon Macs are not explicitly listed on the official specification, but the game’s lightweight engine and 2D/3D hybrid rendering mean Rosetta 2 compatibility is highly likely.

A Note on VRAM and System RAM

Amanita Design does not publish a separate VRAM figure for either tier, which is a gap in the official information. The DirectX 11 compatible GPU requirement for the minimum tier is deliberately vague, and the game’s hand-painted 3D world made of cardboard is not texture-heavy or geometry-intensive. You will not encounter VRAM bottlenecks at 1080p on any dedicated GPU from the last decade. The 4 GB system RAM minimum is the more relevant constraint, and it reflects the game’s memory footprint holding the cardboard city environments, puzzle state tracking, and the fully voiced narration in memory simultaneously. Do not upgrade your GPU for this game. If you have 4 GB of RAM and a computer built in the last decade, you are covered.

Steam Deck

ComponentRequirement
CompatibilityVerified (Valve’s highest rating). Confirmed by tuxDB, Steambase, and DLCompare.
PerformanceRuns natively on SteamOS. tuxDB confirms that “all functionality is accessible with the default controller configuration,” “the game shows Steam Deck controller icons,” “the game’s default configuration performs well on Steam Deck,” and “in-game text is legible on Steam Deck”.
Additional NotesThe game is fully playable using a mouse (or touchpad), Xbox/PlayStation controllers, as well as Steam Deck. Todas Gamers noted that “en la Steam Deck es casi literal, ya que está verificada y es compatible con la pantalla táctil” (on the Steam Deck it is almost literal, as it is verified and compatible with the touch screen). The 15 GB install size is manageable.

What this means in practice: Phonopolis carries a Steam Deck Verified badge, Valve’s highest compatibility rating. tuxDB confirms that all functionality is accessible with the default controller configuration, the game shows Steam Deck controller icons, the default configuration performs well on Steam Deck, and in-game text is legible. The developer confirmed in a Steam Community announcement that “Windows, macOS and Steam Deck are all supported” and that the game is “fully playable using a mouse (or touchpad), Xbox/PlayStation controllers, as well as Steam Deck”. VaporLens data shows a Steam Deck satisfaction rating of 100 percent from 6 Steam Deck-tagged reviews out of 335 total. The 15 GB install size means it takes up a moderate amount of storage space, but the game’s lightweight foundation makes it an ideal fit for the handheld. If you own a Steam Deck and enjoy puzzle adventures, this is an easy recommendation.

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2: Not Available

Phonopolis has no console versions. AUTOMATON confirms the game launched on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG) only, and VGtimes noted that “there’s currently no word on a console release”. Gematsu listed the platforms as PC only in its launch coverage. If you play primarily on a console, you cannot access Phonopolis.

Price, Editions, and Content

Phonopolis is priced at HK$129.00 / $24.99 on Steam, with a Collector’s Edition available for HK$157.32** that includes the soundtrack, art book, and vinyl. A **Machinarium & Phonopolis bundle** is available for **HK$198.40 (20 percent off), and an Amanita Bundle with 16 items is available for HK$895.20 (20 percent off). The game features fully voiced narration in English by Joe Acheson, known for his music project Hidden Orchestra, with subtitles localized into 19 languages. The original score was composed by Tomas Dvorak aka Floex, with sound effects by Matous Godik. A public demo released in February 2026 received over 600 user reviews with 99 percent positive, securing an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating.

Reception and Review Scores

Phonopolis has received strong reviews across outlets. Wccftech described it as “the most beautiful and artfully-constructed game yet from Amanita Design”. The game holds a Metacritic score of 81 on PC. AUTOMATON and Multiplayer.it both confirmed the May 20 launch and praised the game’s distinctive cardboard aesthetic and dystopian storytelling. The game was developed over ten years by a small team of artists, animators, and programmers from the Czech animation and game design community, and a documentary titled Constructing Phonopolis was released on YouTube shortly before launch.

Final Verdict: Can Your PC Run Phonopolis?

Yes, almost certainly. Phonopolis is one of the most accessible games of 2026. The minimum spec asks for a 2 GHz Intel i5, 4 GB of RAM, and a DirectX 11 compatible GPU, which is hardware from the Windows 7 era. The 15 GB install size is moderate, and there is no SSD requirement. If you own a computer built in the last ten to twelve years, you can run Phonopolis without difficulty.

There is no officially published Recommended specification from Amanita Design. The 32 GB RAM and 12 GB VRAM figures that appear in third-party sources are unconfirmed and should not be treated as reliable guidance. Do not upgrade your hardware based on these figures. The minimum specification is sufficient for the intended experience.

On Steam Deck, the game is Verified and runs natively on SteamOS with full controller support and legible text. The developer confirmed that Windows, macOS, and Steam Deck are all supported, and the game is fully playable with mouse, touchpad, or controller. There are no console versions, and Amanita Design has not announced plans for PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo releases. There is native macOS support for Intel Macs from 2012 onward. The game holds a Metacritic score of 81 and has been praised as one of the most beautiful and artfully constructed games in Amanita Design’s catalogue.
